Celebrating the World Premiere of MARCHING IN THE DARK by Kinshuk Surjan
We have the immense privilege to be at Copenhagen and experience the whirlwind that is CPH:DOX once again!
We welcomed onboard the feature documentary debut by Kinshuk Surjan MARCHING IN THE DARK which has its World Premiere at CPH:DOX – a beautiful and compelling film about women’s solidarity in the face of a vicious cycle of debt in Indian agriculture. The film is part of CPH:DOX’s new Human:Rights competition section. It’s a pleasure to renew our collaboration with production company Clin d’oeil after enjoying great success with ARICA by Lars Edman and William Johansson Kalén which they co-produced in 2020.
Intent on providing a better life for herself and her children after her farmer-husband’s suicide, Sanjivani struggles against her culture’s traditional abandonment of widows, until she joins a discussion group with other farmer-suicide widows. Empowered by community, shared stories of resilience, and unexpected solidarity, Sanjivani cautiously forges a path forward.
MARCHING IN THE DARK is produced by Evelien de Graef and Hanne Phlypo at Clin d’Oeil Films. It is co-produced by Digna Sinke at SNG Film and Arya Rothe at NoCut Film Collective.
The premiere received a warm reception at Cinemateket in Copenhagen in the presence of director Kinshuk Surjan, protagonist Sanjivani Bhure, Dr. Potdar, producers Evelien De Graef and Hanne Phlypo, editor Joëlle Alexis, and Ishita Lohiya, representing the Indian NGO Manavlok.
“There’s a bruised dignity at the heart of Kinshuk Surjan’s documentary.” … “This painfully vital documentary is a stirring declaration that demands we listen to their stories with the generosity they deserve.”
High on Films
Also premiering for Denmark at CPH this year we have the pleasure to present Juan Palacios’ masterful documentary AS THE TIDE COMES IN, the poignant award-winning sophomore feature by Lina Soualem BYE BYE TIBERIAS and INTERCEPTED by Oksana Karpovych, a powerful exposé of the war in Ukraine.
Thank you, CPH!
