INTERCEPTED by Oksana Karpovych released in the US on October 4
We’re thrilled to announce that INTERCEPTED, Oksana Karpovych’s powerful documentary, will have its US theatrical release on Friday, October 4, 2024, at Film Forum, through our partnership with Grasshopper Film. Working with INTERCEPTED has been a meaningful journey, and we’re excited to see it reach audiences in the US and for viewers to experience the film’s profound and timely exploration of the war in Ukraine.
Karpovych’s INTERCEPTED offers a truly unique look at the devastating effects of war, contrasting quiet moments of daily life in Ukraine with intercepted phone conversations between Russian soldiers and their families. These candid, often disturbing exchanges reveal the disconnect between soldiers and the brutal reality of their actions, all while Ukrainians rebuild their lives amid destruction. It’s a film that’s gripping, emotional, and hauntingly relevant, especially in today’s climate.
Working with Grasshopper Film on this release has been an absolute pleasure, and we’re grateful for their commitment to bringing this important film to US audiences.
This film invites audiences to confront war in a way that’s both deeply personal and universally impactful. Critics have responded overwhelmingly positively:
“Terrific…an austere and harrowing chronicle of life, death and indifference.”
– Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
“Grade: A. The movie’s stylistic tension, between images of life being lived (or having been lived), and disembodied voices portending death, connects the dots between ideology and action, between propaganda and bloodshed… it points its microphone unflinchingly at the darkest parts of the human soul, while forcing the viewer to hold the camera and search for the brutality within its images and empty spaces. It makes the audience, and their recognition, a necessary ingredient to portraying the bigger picture.”
– Siddhant Adlakha, IndieWire
“A portrait of the war in Ukraine told through haunting images and soundscapes…A spare psychological portrait of soldiers at war. Gleaned directly from their conversations, this is an honest depiction of how empathy disappears and malice takes over.”
– Murtada Elfadl, Variety
“A triumph for public domain-derived journalism (which is Karpovych’s background) and the non-fiction filmmaking that can spring from it.”
– David Katz, Cineuropa
We are also excited to share that Oksana Karpovych will be in attendance for Q&A sessions during the opening weekend:
- Friday, October 4, 7:00 PM – Q&A co-presented by the Ukrainian Institute of America
- Saturday, October 5, 7:00 PM – Q&A co-presented by Razom for Ukraine, moderated by impact producer Polina Buchak
This release represents an important milestone for INTERCEPTED, and we are confident it will leave a lasting impression on audiences. Tickets are now available at filmforum.org.
