The Award, named after the Latin word “lux,” meaning “light,” is organized by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy, in collaboration with Creative Europe MEDIA and Europa Cinemas.
Highlighting the European Parliament’s commitment to culture and education, the LUX Audience Award provides support to European cinema and promotes cultural diversity.The nominated films raise awareness about current social and political issues and engage audiences in debates about Europe in a thought-provoking way, and reflect the beauty and diversity of European cinema.
The five films nominated for the LUX Audience Award’s fifth edition were publicly unveiled on 18 September 2024 at the European Parliament in presence of Members of European Parliament (MEPs), audience, filmmakers and film professionals.
Since its World Premiere at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival in the Forum Section, INTERCEPTED by Oksana Karpovych has become a standout documentary on the global festival circuit. The film, which exposes the dehumanizing impact of war through intercepted phone calls from Russian soldiers in Ukraine, has garnered critical acclaim for its harrowing portrayal of modern conflict. Following its Berlinale debut, INTERCEPTED received numerous accolades, including Special Mentions from both the Amnesty International Film Award and the Ecumenical Jury, and went on to win prestigious awards such as the SIGNIS Award and Best Direction at BAFICI, as well as the Silver Horn for Best Film on Social Issues at the Krakow Film Festival. With screenings at major festivals like Thessaloniki IDFF, CPH:DOX, and Hot Docs, the film continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
The nominated films will be translated and subtitled into all official EU languages with free screenings taking place across all EU Member States in the upcoming months.
Both the public and Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) can rate the films online. The film with the highest total score, rated by the public and MEP will win the LUX Audience Award. The winner will be announced at the LUX Audience Award Ceremony taking place in the European Parliament in April 2025.
